Narrative Engineering vs Creative Writing: What's the Difference?
Narrative engineering treats "show, don't tell" as a measurable design problem. How it differs from creative writing and why it needs it.
Short answer: Creative writing is the practice of producing literary text guided by intuition, craft tradition, and workshop feedback. Narrative engineering, as I use the term on this site, is a proposed framework that treats one specific part of that practice — the encoding of emotion into physical, measurable detail — as a design problem with explicit parameters and testable rules. It is not a replacement for creative writing and not an established academic discipline. It is an attempt to make one piece of the craft inspectable.
The gap the term is meant to fill
Every creative writing classroom teaches "show, don't tell." Almost none of them defines it operationally. What exactly counts as showing? How much showing is enough? When does a shown detail collapse back into telling? The advice is repeated because it works — and it stays vague because the tradition transmits it by example, not by specification.
That vagueness has a cost. When feedback is "this feels told," the writer receives a verdict without a mechanism. They can imitate examples, but they cannot inspect the rule they supposedly broke. My claim — and it is a claim, not a settled result — is that at least part of "show, don't tell" can be specified precisely enough to be applied, checked, and argued about.
That specification project is what I call narrative engineering. The word engineering signals intent, not status: making implicit craft rules explicit, so they can be tested and, where they fail, revised or discarded.
What creative writing does that engineering cannot
Before the comparison, the disclaimer the comparison needs: nothing below implies that creative writing is inferior, pre-scientific, or waiting to be automated.
Creative writing handles everything the framework deliberately ignores: what a story is about, why anyone should care, which sentence rhythm carries a paragraph, when to break a rule on purpose. Voice, structure, moral weight, timing — these remain matters of judgment. A text produced by rules alone is a specification exercise, not literature. The framework covers a narrow band of the craft: the sentence-level encoding of interior states into exterior physics. Everything else stays where it has always been — with the writer.
What narrative engineering adds: a worked contrast
The core method behind this site, Objective Projection, encodes emotion through six physical channels instead of naming it: light (Luminous Decay), temperature (Thermal Gradient), sound (Acoustic Impedance), motion (Kinetic Momentum), pressure and openness of space (Atmospheric Pressure), and geometry (Spatial Geometry). On top of the channels sit six working rules — among them an Emotion Embargo (no emotion labels in the narrator's voice), a Simile Prohibition, and Materialized Metaphors (an abstract state rendered as one concrete, measurable detail).
Here is the difference in practice. A told version of a scene:
She waited for the call, growing more anxious with every minute.
A creative writing workshop would flag this and say: show it. Narrative engineering asks a further question — through which channel, at what value? One possible engineered version:
22:41. The phone lay face-up on the table. She turned the mug ninety degrees, then back. The radiator clicked twice and went quiet.
No emotion word appears; the anxiety is carried by a clock reading, a repeated micro-action, and a sound that stops. The parameters are invisible in the final text — the reader reconstructs the state from physical evidence. That reconstruction is the whole point: this is the told–shown axis made operational. Told states the feeling on the surface; shown suppresses it into physical cues the reader must rebuild.
The workshop and the framework agree on the diagnosis. They differ in what they hand the writer afterward: the workshop hands an example, the framework hands a checklist that can be applied to the next scene without the instructor in the room.
Not a rivalry — a layer
The honest way to draw the relationship is vertical, not horizontal. Creative writing is the practice; narrative engineering is a proposed instrument layer underneath one part of it, the way music theory sits under composition. No one confuses knowing intervals with writing a melody, and no one argues that theory makes composers obsolete. The theory makes one slice of the skill teachable, checkable, and transferable — and leaves the rest to the musician.
Two consequences follow. First, a writer can reject the framework entirely and still write superbly; most great prose was written without it. Second, the framework can be wrong in ways intuition cannot: because its rules are explicit, they can be tested and can fail in public. That exposure is the price of the word engineering, and it is a price worth naming.
What the tests actually show — and don't
That exposure is not hypothetical; I have been running the tests, and the results cut both ways.
On the encouraging side, some rules are crisply operational. In a reliability study on 120 scenes, the Simile Prohibition reached perfect agreement between a rule-based detector and a human rater — "is there a simile here?" turns out to be an answerable question.
On the uncomfortable side, other rules resist specification. Across five separate comparisons — a rule-based detector, and four different large language models rating a held-out set of 100 scenes — the Materialized Metaphor rule produced chance-level agreement with a human rater every single time. Either the concept is genuinely inferential in a way machines don't capture, or my definition of it is not yet operational. Both readings stay on the table, and the second one is a direct criticism of the framework as it stands.
Two more caveats belong here, stated as plainly as the results. Applying a rule to a text is not the same as validating that the rule works on readers; whether these techniques actually change what a reader reconstructs is a separate, preregistered experiment that has not yet been run. And the convergence the framework predicts is statistical, not deterministic: two writers given the same parameters will not produce the same scene, and the framework does not claim they should.

What narrative engineering is not
Not a formula for good writing. The rules constrain one encoding channel. They say nothing about story, character, or meaning, and a text can satisfy every rule and still be dead on the page.
Not anti-intuition. The framework is downstream of intuition: it tries to describe what skilled writers already do, not to replace the doing.
Not an established discipline. "Narrative engineering" as used here is one independent researcher's proposed framing. There is no institute, no journal, no accrediting body behind the term — and any citation format on this site says exactly that.
Not a claim that machines understand literature. If anything, the test results above point the other way: the most inference-heavy rules are precisely the ones machines could not label reliably.
Not finished. The rules have version numbers because they change when the evidence says they should.
Frequently asked questions
Is narrative engineering a real academic field? No. It is a framework proposed by an independent researcher (me). The datasets, rules, and test results are public so that others can check, reuse, or refute them — that openness, not institutional status, is the basis on which the term asks to be judged.
Does this replace creative writing courses or workshops? No. It covers one narrow skill — encoding interior states as physical detail — and deliberately ignores everything else a workshop teaches: structure, voice, meaning, revision judgment.
Can I write well without any of this? Yes, and most great writers have. The framework is a proposed instrument for teaching and inspecting one technique, not a prerequisite for using it.
Isn't reducing emotion to physical parameters mechanical? The parameters are scaffolding, not surface: they never appear in the finished text. What the reader meets is a scene; the six channels only shape which details the scene is built from. Whether the result reads as mechanical is an empirical question the framework accepts it must eventually answer with reader data.
Has the framework been proven to work? No. Some rules are reliably applicable (similes, emotion labels); others currently are not (materialized metaphors); and the effect on real readers has not yet been tested. Applying rules is not validating them — that distinction is stated everywhere on this site, on purpose.
