Founding Preface

I practiced journalism for fifteen years. Thousands of stories in politics and economics passed through my hands. In that time, I came to see that the most critical decision in journalistic practice — what gets published and what does not — has never been placed on an objective foundation.

That decision is made by intuition, by pressure, by fear, or by conscience. None of these is measurable. None is repeatable. All are subjective.

Journalism is not practiced by intuition. Even when it appears to be, unmeasured physical forces are at work behind every decision. I am founding the discipline of News Physics to make those forces measurable.

The publication decision is not a matter of feeling. It is the equilibrium point of measurable forces.
Fundamental Observation

A quality story that goes unpublished does not die. It surfaces on social media, through another journalist's pen, through a leak. This is not coincidence. This is a law of physics:

Information under high pressure always flows toward a low-pressure zone. Institutional walls can delay this flow. They cannot stop it.

When the Physics of Literature modelled fictional narrative through physical variables, a core insight emerged: narrative is subject to universal laws. News Physics carries that insight into the flow of factual information. Fiction and reality do not constitute two separate systems — they are two different manifestations of the same physical laws.

Three Fundamental Laws

Law 1 — The News Pressure Law

Every news story carries a potential energy. That energy is determined by the story's social significance, its temporal urgency, and the exclusivity of the information it contains. The publication decision is the threshold point at which potential energy converts into kinetic energy.

Np = Ss × Tu × Ie
Np: News Pressure  ·  Ss: Social Significance
Tu: Temporal Urgency  ·  Ie: Information Exclusivity

Stories with high Np close off the public agenda to competing topics — just as a mass bends the space-time around it. This law also explains why disinformation tends to cluster around certain "black hole stories."

Law 2 — The Institutional Resistance Law

Every news organisation carries a resistance coefficient shaped by its political position, economic dependencies, and editorial courage. A story is published only when its potential energy exceeds this resistance.

Ir = Pp × Ed / Ec
Ir: Institutional Resistance  ·  Pp: Political Position
Ed: Economic Dependency  ·  Ec: Editorial Courage

Publication condition: Np > Ir. Every decision below this threshold is not editorial — it is physical. The organisation's resistance coefficient has suppressed the story's pressure.

Law 3 — The Information Entropy Law

An unpublished story accumulates entropy over time. Its information disperses, its sources dry up, its currency fades. A story that falls below a certain threshold enters an irreversible dissolution.

Hs = ∫ Np(t) dt → Thermal Death Threshold

This is why "we'll publish it later" is always costly: story energy is a function of time, and decisions made without accounting for the story's half-life always result in loss.

Four Fundamental Axioms

01
The Intuition Embargo

Journalistic decisions cannot be justified by gut feeling. Every decision must be grounded in measurable variables. An editor's intuition is the outward expression of an unmeasured Ir value — and it can be measured.

02
The Pressure Model

Whether a story is published is a question of equilibrium. News pressure (Np) and institutional resistance (Ir) are measured and compared. Publication threshold: Np > Ir.

03
The Entropy Imperative

Every story has a half-life. The publication decision must account for that half-life. "We'll publish it later" is not an editorial preference — it is a physical loss.

04
Conservation of Information Energy

An unpublished story does not disappear. It flows to another channel, another time, another journalist. Institutional obstruction does not destroy information — it only delays the moment it converts to kinetic energy in another system.

Fake News: Fake Np Injection

In the News Physics system, fake news is neither antimatter nor a refractive index error. Antimatter destroys the system — fake news does not destroy it, it deceives it. A refractive index error deflects light — fake news creates light from nothing.

The precise definition: fake news is the artificial attribution of high Np to content that has no genuine social significance, temporal urgency, or information exclusivity. It appears as a force within the system but carries no physical correlate.

Nptotal = Npreal + ΔNpfake

ΔNpfake (Artificial Inflation): the fake gas pumped into the system through bot accounts, manipulative headlines, algorithmic amplification, and coordinated dissemination. The diffusion kinetics and pressure graph alone can expose the fraud — without reading the text at all.

Echo Chambers: Frozen Systems

Echo chambers are not merely closed-circuit valves. The precise definition: an artificial Np loop trapped inside high Ir. Real information cannot enter because Ir is too high. The artificial Np inside circulates continuously. Entropy cannot exit. The system does not collapse — it freezes in place.

ComponentState Inside Echo ChamberPhysical Correlate
Input ValveClosedRejection of external reality (High Ir)
Pressure (Np)Artificial and HighContinuously recycled manipulation
TemperatureLocally very highIntense emotional density
Work (Output)ZeroNo social progress or consensus produced
Objective Projection: Low Road Infiltration and Phase Transition

Objective Projection does not enter an echo chamber as a direct information packet — it strikes the Ir wall and bounces back. But a raw physical stimulus works differently.

A cold surface. The moment footsteps stop. The silence a sound leaves behind. These do not enter through interpretation — they enter through the body. The Ir wall filters symbolic content. It cannot filter physical parameters.

An ideological sentence is rejected as data by the Ir wall. But "the moment footsteps stop" is merely a frequency change — the system cannot code this as threat or ideology, and therefore cannot filter it.

Biophysical Trace Decay (BTD)

Objective Projection is not a neutrino — a neutrino leaves no trace. Objective Projection leaves a trace: Biophysical Trace Decay (BTD). The more accurate analogue is a catalytic substance. It enters the system, initiates the reaction, and does not itself change — but the system is no longer what it was.

TargetCortex (High Road)Autonomic Nervous System (Low Road)
System Resistance (Ir)Maximum — reflectionMinimum — infiltration

The ultimate claim of News Physics: the truth of a story does not depend on editorial verification — it depends on the phase-transition potential that story creates in the recipient's biophysical system.

Ecosystem Position: The Physics of Reality

News Physics is a discipline that runs parallel to, but independent of, the Physics of Literature ecosystem. The Physics of Literature models the physical transmission of emotion; News Physics models the physical flow of information. Together they form the Physics of Reality framework, both resting on the same epistemological ground: physical laws eliminate subjectivity.

Conclusion

News Physics transforms journalism from a discipline concerned with "what is told" into an engineering field concerned with "what force, in what direction, with what mass, the told thing moves."

When this discipline is established, three fundamental transformations occur: objectivity ceases to be an ideological claim and becomes a technical requirement. Fighting fake news shifts from a war of ideas to a problem of hydraulic equilibration. Dissolving echo chambers becomes not a matter of social psychology but of thermodynamic phase transition.

When News Physics is established, verifying the truth of a story will no longer require a judge — it will require a pressure gauge.

Score a news case across four independent metrics — System Fit, Actor Power, Tension, Diffusion — to produce its physical profile. Each metric maps to a core News Physics operator: Np, Ir, or Hs.

Case Analysis Interface · Score 1 (lowest) → 5 (highest)
SF System Fit f(Ss·Tu)
Structural compatibility with publishing environment — agenda, channel, timing.
AP Actor Power f(Ss)
Real impact capacity of the story's central subject — not formal title.
T Tension f(Np/Ir)
Normalised conflict between News Pressure (Np) and Institutional Resistance (Ir).
D Diffusion dNp/dt
Actual post-publication spread — the time derivative of News Pressure.
